For when you hear “FRAUD!”

or any other degrading, degenerative name inside your head.

It’s so easy to believe the worst, perhaps about others, but most definitely about ourselves. We are a frail, insecure creature no matter our history, no matter the life we’ve lived. Innately we long to be accepted, approved of, loved. From the moment of birth we crave- need- affection, comfort, intimacy; the by-products of LOVE.

When we’re denied those displays of affections our minds tell us we must not be lovable. There must be something wrong with us. In us. We slowly form our own degenerative vocabulary:

“useless”

“worthless”

My mother’s words began my lexicon early, the canon of my thoughts

“unwanted”

“dispensable”

When actions by ones we love and trust hurt us, our self-image declines while our vocabulary grows. My father’s invading, violent hands told me

“deserving”

” a problem”

When we’re afflicted whether by choice or biology, we come to find more new names. When I heard I was “a biological accident”, I learned I was just that

an “accident”

a “freak of nature

As I drowned my sorrows in booze I became

“a lush”

“a loser”

When we’re the perpetrator, no matter how big or small, we prove the accuracy of our words. I left my children, therefor I was

“selfish”

“cruel”

I committed adultery, therefor I was

“dirty”

“a whore”

Throughout our lives incidents and dialogue invade our senses, our hearts, our beliefs. They form the people we see as we look at ourselves. (We too are the culprits, so careless with our actions, the words that fall from our lips.) Sooner rather than later we have a littony of negativity looping around our minds; an ever-repeating recording.

And oh how Satan loves that. What we don’t do to ourselves, he’ll certainly, gladly accomplish for us. He stands behind us, whispering in our ears. He presses the “repeat” button. He babbles until he has us so very deep in a pit of worthlessness and shame. It’s his job to steal, kill, and destroy. (see John 10:10) He is the great liar. The great deceiver.

But here’s the thing, Dear Reader

You are NOT unlovable

no matter what’s happened to you.

You are NOT deserving

no matter what you’re afflicted by.

You are NOT worthless

no matter what you’ve done.

Because

When God calls you;

When He says “come”;

When you submit;

When you commit

He changes everything. Absolutely everything.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

(2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV)

He washes you clean.

Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.

(Isaiah 1:18 NIV)

He makes you new.

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

(Ezekiel 36:26 NIV)

But, before all that; way before all that

He LOVED you.

Yes, you.

He CHOSE you.

You are HIS.

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—

Ephesians 1:4-5

As I begin this journey, as I try to speak I often find my thoughts cut short

“Fraud! Liar! Who are YOU!”

And you will too, or similar, as you live your life as His child. But stand firm, my Friend. Don’t believe those lies echoing in your ears. Open your bible. From beginning to end, page after page, the words in red are yours. Yes, yours. And these words are the very truth, the only truth, the ever-constant truth

to believe in,

to cling to,

to live by.

I welcome your thoughts...
